How To Tell What Wood Projects Are Best For You And Your Side Hustle

When you’re checking out the best wood projects for you personally to build and sell there are a few thing you have to think about. There’s no one  best seller that fits every situation because there are just so many variables.

Main points to consider:

  • What are your skill levels?
  • Who would you be selling to?
  • Do you have basic tools or a well set up workshop with lots of machinery?
  • Do you want a little extra income or a full time business?

Bird Houses – A Solid Seller

According to Jim Morgans Wood Profits (yup, I get a commission on this)  bird houses are a great seller. In fact they’re in just about all the different lists of best selling woodworking projects that I’ve come across.

They’re relatively simple to make, you don’t need lots of expensive machinery, and you don’t have to be an advanced woodworker.

I don’t know if they’re the most profitable woodworking projects to build and sell, but they are solid performers. According to Wood Profits “It’s a little strange, but you can charge premium prices for birdhouses and people are ready to pay for it”.

A tip to make your birdhouses more valuable and to stand out from the crowd is to include a small info sheet on the birds they’re designed for, their habits and history, and how to get results with the birdhouse.

And you can get one up on all the generic birdhouses out there by selling houses designed specifically to suit different species of bird.

For example, if you live in an area with lots of wrens, you can build and sell birdhouses designed to suit wrens.

Include an info sheet on the birds they’re designed for to make the value of your birdhouses even higher.

Getting More Ideas For  Woodworking Projects That Sell

What if you don’t like any of the top 10 best sellers we’ve listed, or you just want something different? How do you find other wood projects that sell?

Here are some ways to see what else is selling.

Go to the local markets and see what others are selling and what prices they’re charging. (And if they’re actually selling.)

Check online at Etsy. If you haven’t come across Etsy before, it’s an online marketplace for unique and handmade items.

From Wikipedia:

“Etsy is an e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies, as well as unique factory-manufactured items. These items cover a wide range, including art, photography, clothing, jewelry, food, bath and beauty products, quilts, knick-knacks, and toys.”

Here are two good ways to check what woodworking projects are selling on Etsy.

Use CraftCount

You don’t even have to log in. Go to the website http://www.craftcount.com/  and just under the header image click on Top Sellers By Category. Down near the bottom of the lefthand sidebar you’ll see woodworking. Click on that and you’ll see the top selling Etsy stores in woodworking. You can click on any store you like to be taken to that store so you can check out what they’re selling.

Use EtsyRank

Sign up (it’s free). You’ll get a confirmation email where you need to click on a link to verify your membership.

Once you’re logged in you can go to “Tools’ on the left sidebar, then “Rank Checker” Enter a keyword at the top of the page and hit search. You’ll get a looong list of items using that keyword (eg wooden). You can see the number of daily views for that item, price and other useful information. Just be sure to use your own country (The shop location text box).

How to Make Your Woodworking Projects More Profitable

If you’re selling your woodworking projects you want them to be as profitable as possible. Thats affected by how you do the work and how much you pay for materials. Just changing your workflow can have a major impact on your profitability.

So first of all keep a track of all the expenses that go into your projects, including your time. Then it’s far easier to control your costs and see when you’re bringing them down.

Save Time To Make More Profits

How long a project takes has a big affect how much profit you make. Even if this is a hobby that’s just used to bring in a bit of extra money, if you can make more in the same time, you’ll have more to sell and you’ll make more money.

I know this isn’t rocket science, but it all goes to helping you sell more of your woodworking projects for more profit.

So how do you cut your time without having to work harder?

One way it to use more machinery. If you have a table saw, nail gun, power sander or other time saving equipment you’ll get more done.

Another way is to make several items at once. You cut all the components at once while you’re all set up, you assemble them all at once and you finish them all at once.

And don’t use time consuming traditional methods if there is a much faster way to do the job. For example dovetail joints the traditional way are slow, but if you use a router and a jig you’ll get the job done in a fraction of the time.

Try to save time on the assembly as well. Have a good think about how it’s done and you may well come up with a more efficient method. Unfortunately it’s a bit hard to give recommendations on this since every project is different but you can try to set up like a little factory. Have all the components including fasteners close to hand so you’re not wasting time fetching things.

Make simple jigs to hold parts together if that will save you time. Of course that’s assuming you’ll be making lots of similar items.

You’ll still be getting enjoyment from your work, you’ll just be cutting out unnecessary time-consuming work.

Cut Your Timber Costs

Shop around, costs can vary from supplier to supplier. If you’re making small items let your supplier know you can use offcuts as well. And if you don’t need expensive exotic woods, don’t use them.

Some plans will tell you what wood to use but if it’s an expensive wood you may be able to use a cheaper one.

For example, the plans may be from England, and stipulates wood that is inexpensive in England, but that is expensive in the USA. In that case you can find a similar local wood that will do the job but is much less expensive.

If You’re Thinking About A Woodworking Side Hustle…

As you can see, finding best selling woodworking projects is only part of the story.

I’ve really only just touched on that and how to make money from your woodworking. There’s still things like how to sell your projects, who to sell to, finding plans and so on.

If you’re serious about selling your woodworking projects, Jim Morgan’s Wood Profits could help you sell and be profitable just as much as any of the other tools in your workshop. (Disclosure, If you buy Wood Profits from my link I’ll earn a commission. You won’t pay any more though.)
